SF Chronicle: In purple California, lawmaker sisters take on their MAGA sheriff

It's been quite a year for the state's most MAGA sheriff and the sibling lawmakers working to restrain him. As the Trump administration challenges states' authority to run their own elections, the Cervantes-Bianco rivalry has eclipsed the borders of the purple county that elected all three and become a broader fight over California's political future.

In May, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Sabrina Cervantes' bill prohibiting law enforcement officials from taking ballots during active elections. The legislation was a response to Bianco's seizure of 650,000 local ballots from November's Proposition 50 vote, his office's third criminal investigation into dubious election claims.

Two more Cervantes bills directed at Bianco - one expanding the ballot protection law to other election materials and one to strip Bianco of his title as county coroner - are sitting on Newsom's desk.
