Press-Enterprise: Bill to split Riverside County coroner’s and sheriff’s offices heads to governor

Riverside County’s sheriff’s and coroner’s offices appear headed for a breakup.

SB 1379 passed the California State Assembly by a 59-19 vote in late August, about three months after gaining state Senate approval. It now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk with California’s legislative session having ended Monday, Aug. 31.

The bill is currently “enrolled” and before the governor, according to the California’s Legislative Information website. Enrollment is a term for bills passed by the Senate and Assembly that are proofread and finalized before being signed or vetoed.

Sponsored by Sen. Sabrina Cervantes, D-Riverside, the bill would divide the coroner from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The split, which would break up offices that have been under one roof since 1999, would take effect by Jan. 1, 2027.
