Committed to Community
Dear Neighbor:
It has been an honor to represent you and our Inland communities in the State Senate over the past year. We had many victories for working families in the Inland Empire, including 8 pieces of legislation signed into law!
Over the past year, we have faced many challenges, including unimaginable disasters, federal uncertainty, and ever-increasing fear amongst our communities. Today, I ask you to join me in remembering Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, two Americans who were killed by federal agents in the streets of Minneapolis this month while exercising their sacred First Amendment right to protest their government. Let us also honor and remember all who have lost their lives because of federal immigration enforcement actions.
As a member of the State Legislature, I value the diverse contributions of our immigrant community and believe all people should be treated with dignity and equal protection under law, regardless of their immigration status. I remain committed to the people of the 31st District and the State of California.
If you or a loved one are currently experiencing hardships or issues concerning federal immigration enforcement, know that I stand with you. You can find state and other immigration-based resources here. You can also report misconduct by federal agents in your community to the California Attorney General’s Office here.

Earlier this month, the State Senate swore in our 50th Senate President Pro Tempore, Senator Monique Limón. Pro Tem Limón is the first Latina, first mother, and the second woman to serve in this role in California’s history.
With this change in Senate leadership came new committee and leadership assignments, including my own as the new Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee! As Appropriations Chair, I look forward to advancing California’s values while evaluating the fiscal impact of legislation. Read more here.

Federal Agencies: My office has seen an influx of calls, inquiries, and opinions regarding federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs & Border Protection (CBP). However, the Constitution of the United States entrusts enforcement of immigration policies to the federal government, so I encourage you to contact your Congressional representatives in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives as they have jurisdiction over those agencies. Casework: My dedicated staff is here to help you! If you are experiencing issues with a state agency, do not hesitate to contact my office, especially if you are dealing with issues with the Employment Development Department—click here for the EDD Assistance Form.
