Cervantes Appointed Chair of Senate Committee on Elections & Constitutional Amendments
Promises to fight to defend sacred right to vote
(SACRAMENTO, CA) --- On Friday, Senator Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) was appointed as Chair of the Senate Committee on Elections & Constitutional Amendments by Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire (D-North Coast).
“I am honored to be appointed as Chair of the Senate Committee on Elections & Constitutional Amendments,” said Senator Cervantes. “Increasing voter participation in our elections has been a priority of mine since I served as Director of the California Voter Project before being elected to the State Legislature. As Chair, I will fight to defend our sacred right to vote, make political campaigns and our elections systems more transparent, and improve access to the ballot for lawfully registered voters in California so their voices can be heard by their government.”
“I want to thank Senate Pro Tem McGuire for his trust in appointing me to this chair position,” the Senator added.
The Senate Committee on Elections & Constitutional Amendments is comprised of five members and has jurisdiction over bills related to elections and constitutional amendments, ballot measures, the Political Reform Act of 1974, and elected officials.
Senator Cervantes brings nearly a decade of legislative experience to her role as Chair of Senate Elections, having served four terms in the State Assembly representing Assembly District 60 (2016-22) and AD 58 (2022-24). She has also been the author of many elections-related bills, most notably Assembly Bill 201 in 2019, the landmark Text DISCLOSE Act. AB 201 created the first transparency and disclosure rules for political text messages in California. Before being elected to the State Legislature, Cervantes also served as Director of the California Voter Project, which seeks to improve voter participation and increase voter registration in California.
On Dec. 2, 2024, Senator Cervantes introduced Senate Bill 3 that was created to address the process that counties use to count the ballots cast by Californians as well as to update the public about election results. “After the past few election cycles, it’s clear that our process must be reformed,” said Senator Cervantes.
Senator Cervantes was also appointed to serve on five additional committees: Banking and Financial Institutions, Governmental Organization, Transportation, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management.
In addition to these Committee appointments, Senator Cervantes is a member of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, the California Latino Legislative Caucus, the California Native American Legislative Caucus, and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus.
