Bay Area Reporter: Transgender bills sent to CA Gov Newsom

The annual waiting game has begun to see if California Governor Gavin Newsom will sign into law or veto a slew of bills dealing with various matters of concern to the state’s LGBTQ community expected to be sent to him in the coming days. The outgoing Democratic leader has a penchant for killing legislation that comes with a hefty price tag, and now faces national scrutiny on his decisions as an expected 2028 presidential contender.

Sent to the governor Monday was SB 1328 authored by lesbian Senator Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) that would require California’s colleges and universities designate a confidential employee at satellite campuses, branch campuses, and outreach centers to support the needs of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff should it become law. It follows on a bill passed in 2024 that required such a person on the main campuses of higher education institutions.
