SCAM ALERT: Beware of Fake Texts That Look Like They are from USPS

February 16, 2024

Dear Friend:

You may have already received text messages, like I have, that masquerade as coming from the US Postal Service (USPS). It often includes an unfamiliar or strange web link indicating that a USPS delivery requires your response. Don’t click the link if you have never signed up for a USPS tracking request for a specific package! The United States Postal Inspection Service is warning the public that this type of text is a scam.

Victims of this type of scam will typically receive a deceptive text message intended to lure the recipient into providing their personal or financial information. These scammers often attempt to disguise themselves as a government agency, bank, or other company to lend legitimacy to their claims.

These scammers want personally identifiable information from you, such as account usernames and passwords, Social Security numbers, date of birth, credit and debit card numbers, personal identification numbers, or other sensitive information.

To protect yourself and others from consumer fraud, visit the USPS fraud prevention page.
