Senators Roth and Ochoa Bogh’s Legislation to Memorialize a Portion of SR 60 for Fallen Riverside Sheriff’s Deputy Isaiah A. Cordero Becomes Law

August 25, 2023

Sacramento, CA—Fallen Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Isaiah Cordero, who was brutally murdered in December during a routine traffic stop, will have a portion of SR 60 memorialized in his name.

“When faced with danger on that residential street in Jurupa Valley, Deputy Cordero didn’t flinch from his duty to protect the community, he didn’t run away from the danger, he ran into it,” said Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) a lead author of Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 16 which makes the designation possible.

“Deputy Isaiah Cordero’s unwavering dedication to serving the people of California will always be remembered as a remarkable legacy,” said Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R-Yucaipa), also a lead author of SCR 16. “This tragic event serves as a grave reminder of the selflessness and unwavering courage required of peace officers and their loved ones.”

“We thank Senators Roth and Ochoa Bogh for authoring this bill to designate a section of Highway 60 in honor of Riverside County Deputy Isaiah Cordero. The commemorative sign will serve as a long-lasting reminder of the service of Isaiah, who lost his life while protecting the community of Riverside County. Although Isaiah is no longer with us, he will never be forgotten by his brothers and sisters in the Riverside County law enforcement community,” said Bill Young, President of the Riverside Sheriffs’ Association.

Cordero, 32 at the time of his murder, joined the Sheriff’s Department in 2014 as a correctional officer. He graduated from the 204th Basic Academy in 2018 and returned to the department before moving to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station in 2020. In 2022, he completed his lifelong dream of becoming a Motorcycle Enforcement Deputy.

SCR 16 passed both houses of the State Legislature and was chaptered into law this week.
