The California School Boards Association will give State Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside, its 2013 Outstanding Freshman Legislator award.

The award for promoting the interests of public schools will be presented at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the Riverside County Office of Education by association President Josephine Lucey and Jesús Holguín, association president-elect and a Moreno Valley Unified School District board member.

Roth was an early supporter of the Local Control Funding Formula, which provides school districts extra money for English learners, low-income students and foster youth, said Lucey, a Cupertino Union School District board member.

Roth said in a news release he “will continue working hard to help ensure California’s more than 6 million school-age children receive the education they need and deserve.”
