Senator Richard D. Roth statement regarding Governor Brown’s State Budget Revision

May 14, 2013

Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement today regarding Governor Brown’s Revision of the proposed California 2013 – 2014 State Budget:

I was disappointed but not surprised the Governor’s May Revision did not include full funding for the UCR Medical School. I am continuing my fight to get full funding for the UCR Medical School to meet Inland Southern California’s severely underserved needs for basic medical care.

My colleague, Assemblymember Jose Medina and I are continuing to push hard for full funding, both in legislation and in the state budget process.

California is suffering from a shortage of physicians and the projected statewide physician shortfall is expected to be 17,000 by the year 2015. The UCR Medical School helps meet California’s growing doctor shortage.  Increased demand for doctors and healthcare providers increases with the implementation of the national Affordable Care Act.

The UCR Medical School is a critical catalyst for new economic growth for Riverside and Inland Southern California that will attract new biomedical research and development. The medical school will grow healthcare employment at all levels – from GEDs to PhDs.
