Senator Richard Roth’s Statement on the Funding Secured for UC Riverside School of Medicine

(SACRAMENTO) – Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement today in response to the final budget deal to be submitted to Governor Newsom:

“This week, the California State Senate and Assembly passed what may be the most consequential budget in our state’s recent history, and I am pleased to announce that we have secured the final piece of funding to expand the UC Riverside School of Medicine.

“This budget allocates $25 million in ongoing funding to support expanded enrollment, in addition to the $93.6 million that was authorized last year for the construction of a new facility. Together, these investments will allow the School of Medicine to double its enrollment capacity from 250 medical students to 500 doctors and medical professionals-to-be.

“The critical shortage of primary care physicians has long affected our region, and these healthcare disparities have only become clearer and concerning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While the need for a medical school in Inland Southern California was ultimately what motivated me to run for office in 2012, the fight did not begin then, nor with me. I share this victory with countless community advocates in our region who have worked for decades to make this dream a reality. Job well done!”
