Senator Roth’s Statement on the Governor’s Revised 2020-21 State Budget Proposal in light of COVID-19

May 14, 2020

(SACRAMENTO) – Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement today in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2020-21 state budget:

“The Governor’s revised State Budget Proposal is a sobering reminder of the far-reaching impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the implications of the projected revenue shortfall are startling, we must earnestly take the necessary steps to pass a balanced budget, while ensuring access to essential services for everyone, especially our most vulnerable.

“On behalf of our region, I am encouraged that the Governor recognized the value that UC Riverside School of Medicine provides to Inland Southern California and applaud its continued inclusion in the May Revision, maintaining a level of investment to ensure it has ongoing support.

“As Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee for Education, the significant reduction in public education funding is concerning but I look forward to working with my colleagues and with leadership to carry out our statewide commitment to supporting students of all ages and backgrounds in the pursuit of quality education.

“We need no reminder of the difficult nature of our decisions going forward. The financial landscape has undoubtedly changed since January and our investments this year must reflect those changes in order to adapt to the new realities. Our budget must be developed with heightened scrutiny, difficult deliberation, and greater efficiencies.  I am honored to continue working on behalf of the 31st District and all who call it home.”
