September 24, 2018

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Senator Richard D. Roth joins several others across Riverside County and the State of California in mourning the passing of former State Senator Bob Presley.

“Senator Presley was a legend in our region, a mentor to me. He was a great man who did great things and he was a true gentleman in a political world that unfortunately seems to have no further use for gentlemen,” said Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside). “It has been my distinct honor to call Senator Presley my friend, and I send my deepest condolences to his family. We will miss him.”

Before his 20 year career as a State Senator, Senator Presley served with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for 24 years, including 12 years as Undersheriff. Senator Presley was first elected to the California State Senate in 1974 and served until 1995. Following his time in the State Senate, Senator Presley served as Chair of the California Youthful Offender Parole Board from 1995 the 1999; and, as Secretary of the California Youth and Adult Correctional Agency from 1999 to 2003.

“Senator Presley’s accomplishments are legion and dramatically improved our region and state. From establishing the California Smog Check Program to overseeing the construction of our modern day state prison system and establishing domestic violence shelters throughout our state he made a difference,” said Senator Roth.

During his 20 years in office, Senator Presley received numerous awards including being named as one of Ten Outstanding State Legislators in the United States by the National Assembly of Governmental Employees. Senator Presley was also twice named "Legislator of the Year" by the California Peace Officers Association; he also received a special award from the California State Sheriffs Association, the Sierra Club's Distinguished Legislative Achievement Award and the League of California Cities' Special Services Award.

“A man, who seldom rested because he was always looking for a way to better the lives of others, will soon be laid to rest. We have all been honored and touched by Senator Presley’s remarkable story and life, now it is our turn to ensure his legacy of justice and public service continues,” said Senator Roth.
