2018-2019 State Budget Makes Significant Investments in Senate District 31

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Senator Richard D. Roth celebrated the money and programs coming to Senate District 31 thanks to the investments made in the California State Budget.

“The budget brings recognition, respect, and resources to Inland Southern California,” said Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside). “It strikes the correct balance of fiscal prudence while making vital investments in mental health care, the backlogged justice system, and veterans transitioning to civilian life.”

Key Highlights of the 2018-2019 State Budget

  • INVESTING IN MENTAL HEALTH – $40 million in new medical residency slots and more doctors in medically underserved areas like Riverside County, and $15 million to establish an innovative tele-psychiatry program at the University of California, Riverside’s Medical School. This tele-psychiatry program will provide mental health services to areas of Riverside County that are the most underserved through the use of mobile treatment units, new psychiatric residents and technology.
     
  • STANDING FOR VETERANS – $1.7 million to expand the California Work for Warriors program, providing jobs for California’s servicemembers, veterans, and their spouses. A portion of $3.5 million (and $3.3 million ongoing) will go to expand the California Military Institute in Perris, California, which serves over 1,000 students from 5th to 12th grade. Part of the California Cadet Corps Program, the California Military Institute is California’s only school-based, applied leadership program conducted within a military framework, stressing leadership, citizenship, patriotism, and academic excellence.
     
  • IMPROVING ACCESS TO JUSTICE – Two new trial court judgeships for Riverside County – the first new trial judge positions in the state since 2007. One new Appellate Justice for the Fourth District Court of Appeal for Riverside/ San Bernardino Counties – the first new Appellate Justice in California in 18 years.

Senator Roth continued: “I am honored to work with this Legislature and Administration to deliver these victories to Senate District 31. I look forward to continuing this good work ensuring our region receives its fair share from Sacramento.”

Roth represents the 31st State Senate District, which includes the communities of Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, March Air Reserve Base, Moreno Valley, Norco, Perris and Riverside. Prior to his election, he served for 32 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 2007 in the grade of Major General.
