Senator Roth Celebrates Governor’s Revised Budget: Investment in Homelessness, Mental Health, and UCR

May 11, 2018

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Senator Richard D. Roth responded to Governor Jerry Brown’s Budget May Revision.

“The newly released budget shows $8 billion in higher revenues. From that $8 billion, Governor Brown has proposed nearly $4 billion in crucial, one-time investments in areas such as homelessness and mental health services,” said Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside). “California is in the grips of a crisis with roughly a quarter of the nation’s homeless population living here. Governor Brown’s $359 million investment in addressing homelessness is paramount to help local governments immediately tackle the growing need in their own backyards. With regard to mental health services, I strongly applaud the newly announced $55 million one-time investment to support psychiatric graduate medical education programs serving Health Professional Shortage Areas – a definition which includes Riverside County – or Medically Underserved Areas in rural portions of the state. This is a major win for Inland Southern California and the rest of the state.

Senator Roth continued: “I also want to applaud Governor Brown on his investment in the preservation of our history with the increase of $430,000 to support the California Newspaper Project at the University of California, Riverside. Journalism is often called the first draft of history, as such, it is our duty to preserve and protect this critical resource.”
