Senator Roth’s Statement on the Governor’s 2016-17 Budget Proposal

January 07, 2016

Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement on Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed 2016-17 budget:

“I was pleased to see that Governor Brown shares my belief that fiscal prudence should continue to be a top budgetary priority, and further pleased to see critical investments being made in education so our students can be truly competitive in the 21st century’s global economy.  As California continues to right its economic ship, I believe it is critical that we not only continue to balance the budget and build the rainy-day reserve, but that we also make smart investments that will create jobs and improve the quality of life for all Californians.

“I am especially pleased to see the Governor is proposing, in small measure, to address the tremendous need to improve California’s dire judge shortage.  This is an issue I was proud to fight for in Senate Bill 229 last year.  This piece of the budget proposal today is a small but critical first step in the right direction.

“I am looking forward to being part of the budget process over the next several months as Chair of Budget Subcommittee No. 4 on State Administration and General Government, and as a member of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee.”
