Senator Roth Statement on Defense Department Announcement On Women Serving in Combat Roles

January 24, 2013

Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) issued the following statement today:

“I applaud Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s announcement this morning to allow women in the Armed Services to serve in combat roles.

“Every single member of our military is fully committed to serving our nation. They are prepared to fight and die to protect the United States – regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

“This historic decision fully acknowledges the role and sacrifice of the countless women in uniform who have been serving in military operations and who have been on the ground and have been in armed conflict for several years.

“Out of 1.6 million Americans in uniform, there are 241,000 women on active duty in the armed forces. During the past decade, 152 women have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

“The nature of the conflicts our nation faces have changed and women fully contribute to the mission of their units and are vital to the success of our military.

“Today’s announcement removes a significant barrier to the careers of women who have committed themselves to serve our nation. I support this decision today and support our women and men serving our nation at home and abroad.”
