Senator Roth Appointed to Governor’s Council on California Military Future

March 28, 2013

California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. appointed Senator Richard D. Roth today to the newly created Governor’s Council on California Military Future.

“The Department of Defense employs over 236,000 Californians and invests more than $40 billion in contracts with defense contractors in our state,” said Senator Roth.  “There is an absolute urgency for California to focus on the important role the state’s military bases contribute to our nation’s defense and to California’s economy.”

Governor Brown created the high-level advisory body to focus on the continued value of California’s military installations and prepare a strategy plan to protect current military operations in California as well as grow new missions in the future.

Senator Roth continued, “I am anxious to get to work immediately with the Governor and the Governor’s Council. The impact of budget sequestration on California is already taking a significant toll on many Californians as well as having serious impacts to our state’s slowly recovering economy.”

Senator Roth said, “The 31st Senate District has military installations including the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division in Norco and March Air Reserve Base. These military bases are essential community partners and are significant to the economic well-being of the Inland Southern California region.”

California is home to 30 federal military installations and the Department of Defense is bracing for more long-term budget cuts.  There is potential for possible future base realignments and closure.
